Does anyone know if you can use symbols from Windows character map with Adobe 6.5 editing programme. If it's possible ,how do you do it. I can do it with no problem with Sony Vegas 10, but find the need to do it with adobe. info gratefully received.
In Character Map, Select and then Copy the symbol that you want (most often I need the copyright symbol).
In the titler, place the cursor where you want the symbol and Paste. The symbol will appear in the style of font that you are using for your title.
You can also Paste complete long titles from Notepad or from text in an email. As an example, every so often I do the edit for a dance school show. Many of the children have complicated foreign names. I get the dance school secretary to email to me the list of children that has been already been assembled for the printed programme. I Copy the text from the email. Next I set up the titler for a roller caption and Paste in the list of names. The list is then formatted to fit a TV screen and extra blank lines are added at top and bottom of the list so that the roller will appear from the bottom of the screen and disappear out of the top. It saves a lot of re-typing (and possible spelling mistakes).
Glad to see that you are using 6.5 - there are a lot of us still out there who find it superior to later software when standard definition editing is to be done. Oh for a High Definition version that would retain all those lovely features that present HD software doesn't have!

Rayl. I've tried this before I asked the question. I've tried it several times since your answer. Nothing happens. I can't bring up any panel or dialogue box that says paste. Am I doing something wrong when I open up the titler?
Hi Roy, to paste click once on your titler screen and press keyboard short cut 'Control and V'.
Or use Paste from the Edit menu in the top menu bar. As Character Map is a 'Windows' application you need to use the Windows Copy/Paste feature to get that symbol into Premiere.
Ray
Once you get used to Windows generic copy and paste (ctrl C and ctrl V) it's just a waste of time opening up menus since almost all windows programs allow it. You can copy and paste a whole timeline or bin with it as well as text in word processors and images in graphics programs, never needing to open up a menu.
Thanks Claire and Rayl. I've tried several times following both your instructions and still it doesn't work although something odd is happening. On Character map I select and copy a pointing arrow. When I follow your instructions, I get a letter of the alphabet on the titler screen. A different letter for a different selection. Roy.

Roy,
The Character Map is a grid 32 characters wide and 7 deep. Starting from the top left hand corner, please tell us which character you are trying to Paste by giving its coordinates (across, down). I'll try it on my copy of 6.5
Claire,
Some people find multi-finger keyboard shortcuts come easily, but some don't. I'm happy to stab a single finger at a key and I use several single-finger shortcuts, but instead of multifinger shortcuts, I prefer to uses the 'mouse and menu' method.

Most of the letters, numbers and symbols has a number corresponding to them but its rather like having a lot of credit cards - you've got a lot of four-number codes to remember. I'd rather put up the Character Map and Select.

Ray, you don't need multi-fingers unless you consider two as "multi", you only need to hold down a Windows modifier key to rid yourself of the tiresome waste of time and effort using menus for simple everyday tasks. I don't remember how long it took before it was second nature for me as it was long ago but I'm sure it didn't take long and now, like riding a bike, no thinking needed.
The most common are:SHIFT, CTRL, and ALT
RAYL. The character map displayed to me must be different to yours as the one I see is 20 Characters across and 12 down.. I am using Windows XP, perhaps you are using a later version of Windows. Anyway the arrow I am trying to use is contained in the Wingding page( 11 down and 8 across) I've even tried to paste in onto this message and I'm just getting this ð symbol pasted. I've tried selecting other symbols without any success So whatever method I use It's not working for me. Roy

You are getting that symbol because you havn't chosen wingdings as your character set in the program you pasted into.
I can't type it into here for the same reason , however that is because you cannot chose wingdings as a font on this webboard.
FYI: this is what you get (on this webboard) if you just type alt+G on a Mac: ©
(OKOK, no use to Roy, but just FYI!) :)
Thanks every one. I have now got the character map symbols pasted into Adobe OK.
The last post from Gary solved it for me. I hadn't selected wingdings in the font panel on the titler. I didn't know you had to as Vegas chooses it automatically. I am now well chuffed. Thanks to every one who told me how to do it. Roy
Glad that worked for you.
Claire
Yes, for me anything more than one is 'multi'.
Not only that, but my standard editing position finds me lounging in a comfortable rotatable chair at an angle to the desk with my feet up (on the desk). My right elbow is supported by the chair-arm and my right hand guides the mouse. The keyboard (on the desk) is out of reach of my left hand unless I lean forward so using the mouse is more relaxing than bobbing forward all the time. Not everyone is the same and diversity is the spice of life!
Roy
I think Gary's got the answer. Just make wingdings your font for that space in the title. Unlike some titlers, the Prem 6.5 titlerallows you to mix fonts in the same title. If THAT doesn't work, maybe making the symbol you want into a graphic will allow you to paste it in.
EDIT - by the time I had written this it was out of date!
Must go now, the band's coming soon.

As reported earlier I have now placed the arrow on the tineline of Adobe 6.5 and I have also found the way to position the arrow so that it points to the object I want to draw attention to. NOW I wish to pick the brains of the people who have helped me before so that I can make the arrow go backwards and forwards in a stabbing motion, which I thinks draws attention to the object better. I have done this with success Using Vegas by means of using Keyframes. I have not the slightest idea how to do it with Adobe 6.5 or Pro 2. So I would be grateful for step by step tuition on how to achieve this effect.
Thanks in advance. Roy
Roy
I've got one or two ideas, but one with flexibility is to make your arrow into a graphic. If it is a white arrow, I would give it a black background.
Then I would use Motion to position it on the screen and set up the movement. Motion has the advantage that you can 'fine-tune' the position using the coordinates and you can Save the motion settings as a file for future use. You can also use Zoom to adjust the size of your arrow in increments if required. The speed at which the arrow moves backwards and forwards is adjusted by varying the length of the graphic clip.
The arrow graphic is inserted over the background picture using luminence keying (or whatever keying is suitable for whatever colour arrow you are using).

(If Dave J. is monitoring this thread may we hope for a solution with style from the man who was King of the Video Effects Workshop?).
Ray. Thanks for your answer, but you've lost me. I haven't the slightest idea how to do what you suggest. I need a step by step tuition on how to move the arrow back and forward. I get as far as seeing the motion panel and that's it. With vegas it's so simple to do. With Adobe I can move the arrow back and forward but can't seem to connect a keyframe with the new positions. Hello Roy, I only have Prem Pro 1.5 on my machine, but I suspect 2.0 is similar.... (not sure about 6.5 though)
In the "Effects Control" tab you will see the controls for Motion.
There is a small stopwatch symbol just to the left of the word Position. Click this and it will start setting position keyframes (which you can see in the small timeline at the right in the effects control window... you may want to expand that window out a bit horizontally).
So the method is :
1. go to the frame you want to start the arrow animation
2. position the arrow
3. click the position stopwatch to start setting keyframes (keyframe 1 is set)
4. go forward in time
5. move the arrow (the next keyframe is set automatically)
repeat 4. and 5. as required
If you are familiar with after effects keyframes, it is pretty much exactly the same, and you can click on those diamond shaped keyframe symbols (in that small timeline in the effects control window) to then delete or drag or copy the keyframes as required.
To make the arrow move backwards and forwards repeatedly over an eight frame cycle
position the arrow in the BACK position.
click on the stopwatch
go forward 4 frames
position the arrow in the FORWARD position (a second keyframe is created).
Now, click and drag a box around the two keyframe symbols and press Ctrl + C (to copy both the keyframes)
Go forward 4 frames and press Ctrl + V to paste the two keyframes
Now go forward 8 frames and Ctrl + V and repeat this as required.
Let me know if this doesn't work for you and I'll try to explain it better....
Good luck
dave
Thanks Dave. Your instructions seem to be very explicit so I will give it a try. I'll report back as to my success or otherwise. Roy
Roy
I'll stand by on a step-by-step until I know how you've got on with Dave's method.
Dave - stylish! (I knew it would be)
Ray
Dave. Thanks for tuition, have now successfully made the desired movement of arrow by following your instructions for Pro2. 6.5 seems to be a different set up. There is no stopwatch that I can see and keyframes don't appear automatically. I'll work on that later and in the meantime I'll use Pro 2 for animating SD. I will use Vegas for HD work,
Ray. Thanks for your help and advice. Roy
