All I do is Black the first 30" of the tape and re-record over the original or Black all of the tape and then re-record. Cleaning tapes, is this done? and I would think that if it had to be then I would rather throw them out.

I used to have a massive degauser for VHS and other stuff but it was less effective at DV and other high density tapes.
The cost of a DV tape is so low that I just reuse an existing tape maybe 10 times and bin it.
Actually, I hardly use mini dv tapes but use full size DVCam ones.
there were tape recoiling companies who'd wipe, check, and certify tapes but that business is long gone I'd imagine.
If you need to record over a tape to wipe it, buy the cheapest DV camera you can find, or one with a faulty screen/damage but a working tape transport
don't wear out a good camera on routine stuff
If anyone`s interested, I`ve got LOADS of MiniDV & full size DV for sale!
I always used to black the first 30 seconds then re-use, hardly ever had a problem
Im shooting on a Z7 sony camera and recorded on tape,,just got a message "YOUR TAPE IS LOCKED" please advise as i can not continue recording
Move the sliding tag across on the spine :)
sorry i moved the tab to allow the tape to record but im still getting the same message...what would it be?
On the edge of the tape you will see a sliding switch, this needs to be positioned so that there is no "hole" to be seen!
Thanks Barry for your kind support,,but i did all this and i still have the same message..i tried to take out the battery and put in a new tape...still the same..did you ever come across such a problem?
Never had that! I used to have a S270 & a couple of Z7`s! Have you tried a different tape?
It is possible that you may have a fault on the deck.
Whilst I can't speak specifically for your particular camcorder, most tape mechanisms that I have come across, from audio cassettes onwards, have detected a record lock by sticking a pin in a hole which is uncovered when you either slide the tag along or break a tab.
If this pin is either broken off, bent or there is a fault with the sensor, then It may show a permanent record lock.
If you still have this problem then I would strongly suggest a trip to the nearest technician.
