Who remembers these things and carrying them to the garage to be re-charged.

Yes I do, see below, and the large battery which was also needed to power our radio (Cossor I think).

I also remember having to be quiet on Saturday evenings when the football results were broadcast and my dad wrote them down.

Aye..that's the type.
I don't know if they were lead/acid types or not but they were very heavy for a wee boy.
We had two. One was handed in to the garage and the pre-charged one was carried home .

The photo was taken last week at Beamish. I couldn't get a clear shot of the accumulator that they had on display.

My father used to charge them up for people for a fee, that was in the late forties! My parents managed a pub as tenants for the village council on 10 shillings a week plus profits from the pub & dad had a garage on the side of the pub to repair cars, happy days, sadly he passed away in `52 at only 54 years of age, I was just 7!
