Hi Guys
Looking to purchase a new edit pc using premiere pro CS6
Comparing the following two base systems.
1. Approx. £520
Intel i7 3770K Ivy Bridge CPU 1
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard
CORSAIR 16Gb 2x8) DDR3 1600
Or
2. Approx. £870
Intel Core i7 3930K Retail - (2011/Hex Core/3.20GHz/12MB/Sandy Bridge/130W) -BX80619I73930K
CORSAIR 4GB DDR3 1600 XMS3 - Single DIMM
Anyone know what the real-world difference would be if I was to get a Xeon processor vs a Hex-Core i7-3930K vs a Core i7-3770K.
I know all about cuda, so would be looking for compatible graphics card also. Do I need to go Intel for cuda to work?

Seems to me to be a bad time for new PC for Premiere. Can you wait a couple of months?
Are you a professional or just doing this for fun?
The new Intel Haswell Processors will be released May/June-ish. It's not the new processor as much as the new motherboards that are going to benefit editors: built in Thunberbolt on the mainboard is going to be great for external drives, storage, etc.
CUDA interesting at the moment: Premiere Pro next is supposed to be as happy with OpenCL as with CUDA, meaning Radeon GPUs might be better bang for buck.
Also Premiere Pro next takes advantage of multiple GPUs. so SLI possibility.
Of course all this moot until it's out and tested in the real world.
Meanwhile if you have to buy now, then hex core better than quad core. More cores = more processing power = real world advantage in anything that crunches numbers, so encoding of any sort, and non-CUDA enabled effects.
i7 fine you don't need Xeon.
Get at least 16GB memory.
The GTX650 Ti BOOST seems to be the value for money card at the moment.
I went for the 3930K OC to 4.6Ghz on an ASUS X79 Pro with 32GB RAM and an NVidia 670 GPU.
But I do this for a living, so for me worth spending the money for speed.
You can use this website to get an idea of what's working well with CS6. You need to subscribe, costs from free to $50 depending on what level of info you get to access.

If you have the budget then why not specify a hex core in the other build?
You don't need Intel for Cuda - you can install an Nvidia card in an AMD system.
Cuda is soon to be joined by OpenCL according to Adobe at NAB.
The i7s have (so far) trounced AMDs offerings - not sure if that will change with OpenCL.
We haven't run AMD on a work machine for years - Athlon 2000 IIRC. Intel has been the safe option for at least a decade.
I tend to pounce when the prices drop - we buy end of line kit - last season's top dog for less. I have never bothered with RAID or anything silly - just tried and tested Asus/Intel gear with Corsair RAM and the most cost effective drives at the time. Nvidia always have a sub-£150 Cuda card that does the job.
Pure power only affects certain workflows. A lot of what we do is basic but quite intensive - it really challenges our Ivybridge/Cuda enabled laptops but is a walk in the park for the the i7 2600K in the studio. I still do a lot of DV or analogue jobs on an old faithful 3.2Ghz P4 RT.X100.
A brand new hex core system might well be faster than our current i7 but in truth the one we already have is plenty fast enough for 99% of what we do.

Never heard of Haswell. Not in any particular rush, so is it worth the wait? Will it be expensive?
most of my work is etheir weddings or 2 camera dance shows, with titles so 3 / 4 video tracks at max.

Mike, one thing that I don't see mentioned is the HDD's. So my advice would be to get as large a SSD for your "C" boot drive. Keep it for Windows (if that is your preference) and also any video editing software, Load any other programmes onto the other drive. That's my set-up, booting up and loading Premiere C6 is on the screen before I have stopped coughing (and I don't have a cold

Hi Robert
The SSD is similar to a Hard Drive but expensive. No moving parts and access is very quick. When booting the PC with a SSD as the main drive (C:) you only need to blink and the PC is ready. Will demonstrate the next time you are down.

Is my posting on PC specifications, it may help in deciding.
I would go for a Hex core CPU as it will speed up encoding considerably.
However many core you go for a minimum of 2Gb RAM per core should be installed.
The motherboard is the key, a tried and tested one.
For Premiere the more CUDA cores the better.
Whilst the next generation of Intel cpu's is nearly here in reality it will be many months before they have been used successfully in edit PC's to justify spending your own money on one. Far wiser to let others de-bug the systems and for them to prove themselves.
