My friend has an original second hand version of adobe after-effects v5.5 production bundle, he wants to export his projects as avi files But when we try to do this we only have the option to save the project as a Macromedia Flash (SWF) there are no other choices available what so ever.

I have adobe after effects 5.5 myself but there a more options to save your files, avi, aiff, dvstream, mpeg4 etc.

What is the problem? Please help

Cheers

Are you overlooking the 'Render Queue'? (Window menu) - there are many options for the output module.

Sounds like a demo version to me.
Phone Adobe and confirm your serial number is for the full version.

just had a look around 5.5 PB
by choosing save, you save the AE project as a AE project. to export a movie you need to add to render Queue.
my AE 5.5 has NO option for macromedia flash at all so i dunno how its trying to export it as flash when it looks like AE doesn't support flash.

ok just had another look and yes if you choose export it will only export it as a macromedia flash. you need to use the render queue

Best Solution as I discovered exploring the After Effects CS6 is:-

After you finished making all your changes into the composition and finalised it, do this:-
1. Click Composition on the top menu bar.
2. Click Save RAM Preview.

It will save the whole composition as an .avi file.

Enjoy !!!!

why are you responding to a 10 year old thread?

Anyway seeing as it has cropped up I'll explain the situation in 2013, in AE Cs6.

On the PC - add files to the render que and you can export as AVI.

On the Mac you cannot export avi files as there is no generic quicktime support for avi under 64bit. You have to export a quicktime mov file (or image sequence) and then convert it to avi using a 3rd party software such as mpegstreamclip.

SAVE RAM PREVIEW is not a good way to export, your limited to exporting lengths of video which fit in your RAM, and the quality depends on youir preview settings where as the render queue allows for control over quality and unlimited output durations.

The render queue has always been the correct way to export from AE.
