...not that I'm blaming Coventry mind you. But I have to report that the following has gone and if you're offered anything that sounds like this in the near future then please let me or the Nuneaton police know 02476 483137.

  • Sachtler 7x7 tripod with carbon legs in a Sachtler tube.
  • Sound devices 302 mixer
  • Beyer dynamic Dt100 phones
  • Sennheiser Me2 mic with K3u pre-amp
  • Sony ECM55B mic
  • Sennheiser radio mic kit ew100 g2 with mke2 and mka40 mics
  • Cool lights portable fluorescent lighting kit consisting of CL455 and CL255 heads and
  • 2 falconeyes tripod stands.
  • Various audio and power cables.

It could have been a lot worse and I am really going to miss the tripod which has been with me a long time and the audio mixer which is a recent but excellent addition but we struggled on to our shoot in Liverpool that day and got replacement kit from Visual Impact, (who should be praised for their rapid response) so the client didn't know the difference.

Don't leave your car even locked on its own, ever, even for a few moments.

Really sorry to hear that. I can understand your frustration and anger.
Thieving scum probably don't even realise how precious and valuable half this gear is.
Let all the video dealers know and I'd keep my ear to the ebay site too.
Hope you hear some good news on it.

The thieves created a small hole beside the passenger door lock and slid a screwdriver in to open the car. It was neatly done, you'd hardly spot it if you weren't looking for it. Apparently the VW golf had this problem a few years back and now it seems they're using the same trick on the Citroen Picasso. Equipment was out of view.

As 'Equipment was out of view.' I'm wondering if they spotted your rear suspension was low with heavy gear. If not, they must have staked the place out and perhaps targeting vehicles with your lock profile.
Was it a coffee stop?
Maybe other drivers at same car park had like damage but nowt stolen and so haven't spotted the hole yet?
Maybe the local (Coventry) Citroen dealer can say if there's been many such break-ins, so police know its probably a local coffee stop targeted each time and perhaps park a Bait car can be used.
..or does that only happen in the movies?

Those I spoke to, (police, insurance and car repairers) suggested that this is a relatively new trick on the Picasso but I do suppose that the car would have looked laden to those on the prowl.

I have a vanvault in the back of my van, about the size of a large holdall, basically a safe which is bolted down, i can get my complete backpack withh all my gear in it in it.
I also have a pager wired to my alarm, so if the alarm goes off and i don't hear it then the pager goes off in my pocket.

Safe cost me just under £100, pager £50.
van safe is similar to this one but a different make

Hmmm - I'm not too sure about this...

If the thief sees this big yellow safe, he will surely realise there's something valuable in it, worth getting their grubby mitts on... So instead they'll pinch the car, drive it to somewhere secluded and spend ten minutes breaking into the box with an angle grinder that they can pick up for £20 in B&Q (or cheaper if they steal that as well).

No good for larger production teams though, I doubt very much Mediox's kit would have fitted into them

We'd need about six to eight of them, one for each camera alone then various production kit and audio equipment and then I'd like to see how we're going to fit full-sized broadcast tripods and lighting kits into them. Not really a practical option for us. :D

We used to use Peugot 406 saloons about 5 or 6 years ago for camera crews. A boot we thought was safer than an estate. Not so - bang the boot just to the left of the boot badge and voila! the boot opened. They did change things in the end but many crews lost complete Digibeta kits in London.
