Video Editing Books/Guides

Hi all. Can anyone give advice or guidance on which book to buy, if any, for a complete novice at video editing.

Also are there any books available on the "do's" and "dont's" on making my own videos?

Many thanks in advance.

John.

If you are using Premiere you can do worse than get hold of a copy of Adobe Classroom in a Book. For a product from the software manufacturer it's not bad at all.

I have found "The Complete Book of Video", David Cheshire, publ by Dorliong kindersley, to be very useful. My edition was published in 1990. I do not know if it is still in print. It predates mini-DV and editing on the PC but in other respects it is very comprehensive for an amateur like me.

Harris Watts' book is really a primer about the whole programme production process - from shooting through to finished product.
It's a good general guide - for budding programme makers - and is a source book used by the Beeb.

For an in-depth look at NLE production techniques I can recommend The Digital Producer (ISBN 0-240-80395-7) an AvidPress
book. It costs around £25 (with CD featuring some useful demo software for speeding up the production process)

Many thanks for your responses. Keitht, I am indeed using Adobe and have ordered the book you mentioned.

John H. I will change my "handle" I have contacted DVDoctor, since the "Profile" page won't allow me do this.

Once again, many thanks for the responses.

Depends what software you're thinking of using .. if it's Premiere 6 you're thinking of, try How To Use Adobe Premiere 6 by Douglas Dixon. Lots of screen grabs, everything clear and logically (and user friendly), otherwise On Camera is a fab basic.

If it's film-making you want, try the Guerrilla Film-makers Handbook second edition

Another great source of material is DV.com (the nearest US equivalent to Computer Video)

Non-Linear Editing by Bryce Button is excellent, as is Producing Great Sound for DV by Jay Rose.

Both these and many more are avilable on Amazon - if you enter these into Amazon, they'll also display other recommended books as well.

One of the VERY best books about Premiere is by Antony Bolante.

Below are the details for his book about Premiere 5 - but he has updated this for Premiere 6, and I've no doubt that will be just as good. Actually, he might even have a version about V6.5 by now, too!
