White Line

Check to see if your Graphics Card drivers are up-to-date first.  Hope both of you are well up there.

Horizontal or vertical? Or since you say "across" do we assume it's horizontal?

Does it run the entire width?

 

It's an LCD monitor is it?

 

And you have checked the cables are firmly attached at both ends?

 

If you go into display properties on the computer and change the resolution displayed on the monitor does the line move?

Since altering and reseting the settings I now get a flickering ghost image below the white line (just below mid screen) if the cursor touches or gets too close to the left lower edge of the screen.

Since the white line moves when you change the display settings it suggests to me an issue with the graphics card and not the monitor.

I doubt it's driver related, Sounds to me like the card itself is on its way out. Possibly overheating.

Have you opened up the case to check the card's fan is still spinning and isn't clogged  up with dust?

Do you have a spare graphics card you can swap out to test?

 

Really useful when people are asking questions like this to list your system components.

 

 

My humble apologies Mark, the white line does not move when I change the screen settings.

 

  

if you remove the cable to the computer does your monitor still allow you to use the menu functions, some do? If so, is the line there on screens produced internally, as opposed to screens produced by the video card? This may point in a new direction - of course simplest is to plug it into another computer and see of the line goes away. If it does, then video card is likely culprit.

Connected monitor to my laptop and the line was still there.

Disconnected cable and switched monitor on. The line was still there on the blank screen.

 

It's not looking good, is it.

You need a new monitor.

Have you checked the warranty period on it? All of mine came with three year guarantees.

 

And if not, there are plenty out there, and probably cheaper than when you bought that one.

Found the extended 'Extra Care Plan'

 

Good news is that it runs out in two days time on the 15th.

 

Bad news is that I bought it from Comet, and it's Comet's own care plan so it wont be worth the paper it's written on.

What make is it? It should last m,ore than 24 months regardless of brand

 Spoke to the Extra Care Plan paople earlier, about 4pm : 0844 854 0943.  They answered promptly. They checked the plan I had,  I discribed the fault, they said a company by the name of Celestica would contact me within 24 hours to arrange a visit.

 

Fingers crossed.
 

Phone call from Celestica today and they told me that a courier will call on Monday with and empty box and collect the monitor for repair or replacement.

Three weeks of phone calls to Celestica and they finaly admitted yesterday that the required part needed for a repair was no longer avaiable. They said that they would pass that info on to the insurers.

The 'Extra Care Plan' people phoned me today and said that they are sending me a cheque for the full cost of the monitor.

 

It was a 23 incher so I will probably now opt for a 24 incher.  But I've spotted a 27 inch monitor...or would that be too big for editing ???

Don't get a 27" 1920 x 1080 monitor.

But if you have a Dual-link graphics card in your computer, and can afford a 27" 2560 x 1440 monitor, the extra screen real estate is fantastic to have.

 

Something like this Dell, for example.

I use this Iiyama Prolite E2773HDS along with a 24" Prolite 2473HDS.  Don't know if they are still available but certainly a lot cheaper than the Dell.

Doh, Harry, that IIlyama is only 1920 x 1080. You can't really compare it to the Dell at 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Got myself a Samsung B300 TV / Monitor from Currys.

 

All I've got to do now is get it to work.

 

Can't compare these with the Dell, Mark (considered it myself, last year) but with finance ruling out that one I only suggested what I choose as the next best. However if I was in the business to make money it would certainly be top of the list along with one of these.

It's the 27 that I have.

 

Attached the stand only to find that it sits with the top of the screen tilted forwards. As yet, I have found no way to tilt it back a bit.

You may have attached it the wrong way round.

I have a Samsung monitor that is like that:  the monitor itself will fit onto the stand either way round, but facing in one direction it tilts forwards. Taking the monitor off the stand, turning it 180 degrees (not upside down, the other 180 degrees) and putting it back on the stand solves the problem

Got a full cash refund from Currys after a conversation/confrontation with a female shop assistant that was becoming rather heated.

Told her to cancel my extended warranty as I was within the seven day 'change my mind' period.

Told her that I was returning the TV as it could not stand upright.

She said they would get an engineer to call and install it. It would cost me £20.

Told her that installation was not a problem and that she could get one of her engineers from the backshop to show how to get the thing to stand upright.

She said 'OK but that will cost you £20.

(Temperature begins to rise)

Told her to forget about an engineer and that I was returning the unit as being faulty.

She said I couldn't do that because I had cancelled the warranty.

Told her that the extended warranty had nothing to do with it and that I was returning it because of a manufacturing fault.

She said that in that case, I should contact Samsung.

(Temperature takes a sharp leap upwards)

Told her that there was no chance of me doing that as I had not bought the TV from Samsung, I bought it from Currys.

She left to speak to her manager.

She asked if I would care to select another of their monitors.

I told her that I would have when I first came in but not now, what I wanted now was a full cash refund and I would settle for nothing else.

She left to speak to her manager.

She then fiddled about in the till and said that a full refund would be credited to my account.

Wife drove the car home as she said that I might be a danger behind the wheel.

 

I'm now thinking about the Samsung S27B550V fron Argos.
