Atomos Ninja & Samarai getting major firmware update
April 13, 2012 - 17:55
Good news for Ninja and Samarai owners is that Atomos are upgrading the firmware on both devices at the end of April to include some pretty useful features.
A Smart Log function which lets you put XML data on the footage, effectively allowing you to do an offline edit before the transfer.
Focus peaking, zebra, false colour and blue only functionality is now coming to the Ninja (and the Samarai).
Automatic file recovery in the event of a power failure is another new feature, as is auto-record when an input signal is detected, loop playback and iphone/ipad/mac/pc recording support.

Are they going to make the interface better? Many of the onscreen icons are so small they are hard to see at a glance, the subtle changes of colour to indicate status is not helpful either. It would be a big improvement to have a much clearer interface.

I don't think they are changing the icon size and I agree it can be a bit fiddly when you're recording using the monitor screen.
Atomos have just announced the Ninja 2 with a higher quality display and HDMI in and out.
However it turns out the Version 3.0 of the firmware only works on the Ninja 2 and those of us who have an original Ninja are going to be offered the opportunity to upgrade to a Ninja 2 with a swap out and the additional cost of about $500 - according to Jeromey Young on the NAB video which doesn't quite chime with what they say on their website
"This simple firmware update adds groundbreaking functionality to their 10-bit field recorders, at no extra cost."
but I have to say that features added are things that I personally do want and would be willing to pay for but I am a little unhappy with the way that they have put this information out, it is misleading.
