Hi Everybody!
Cant understand this.....I got a Sony DVcam player DSR-11. Got the DV cable from the back of it into the rear of my PC. The Adobe PremPro1 is all up n running..... I click on 'File'...'Capture', and up comes the Capture Window with 'Capture Device Offline'.
Even though I can start playback and pause etc using the capture window...the 'Record' and 'Stop' buttons are greyed out.
It cant be anything BAD because it captured perfectly earlier this week. I must have toggles something, but have checked all 'inputs' and 'output' switches...well I think I have!:(
When I click on the 'device control options' in the Capture window it tells me that I am 'Online'.....Bugger!!!!!!!
Please help!

Are your DV tape and Adobe project both PAL? Isn't there a switch on the back of the DSR-11 - that needs to be set to PAL too? Just throwing things out here...

I have had problems with the capture side of Premiere in the past, but even when that refused to work, I was always able to capture with WinDV.
It's free, so maybe worth a try - if only to confirm whether the problem is with Premiere or something else.

As the DV/firewire/ilink cable is bi-directional the pc to device connection sometimes gets confused in doing its handshake on first connection, as to whether its to record TO pc or FROM pc. I note your device is a player, not recorder, so you would expect this confusion not to arise here..but don't count on it.
Suggest trying by resarting application (perhaps also rebooting with power off break) and establish connection in different sequence, including removing/reconnecting cable(though try to avoid this when pc/device powered as I believe this can cause knackering of firewire card) - perhaps by not turning player on until File/Capture selected, so that it knows in the handshake import/capture is the expected flow direction.

Just a POI: The DSR-11 is both a player and recorder.

Can't capture

Thank you. I have switched everything off and I will switch it all back on and keep my fingers crossed!
Both tape and dv player were PAL and nothing has changed since last time I recorded. In fact! Last time I opened the Capture Window I actually recorded from a svhs video recorder connected to the Sony DVcam player. The Capture Window 'told me' that no tape was inserted in my dv player, but I still had the option of pressing 'RECORD' which worked perfectly.
Hope it works when I turn it back on!!!
Thanks again.

Maybe that's your problem: there's a switch on the front of the DSR-11 "Input Select = DV, S-Video or Video". Maybe it's still set to S-Video?

Long time since I used PP 1 but isn't there a option in the capture video settings where you have to set it at DV Capture? Maybe you still have it set for Composite. This can be checked in the F5 Capture window (top RH triangle).

Thanks Mooblie.
I've found specs here:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/212935-REG/Sony_DSR11_DSR_11_DVCAM_DV.html#specifications

PK, can you confirm your DSR-11 only has it's DV out in use - with no cables connected to other outputs.

I note the firewire socket is labelled DV in/out. With cameras, there is often a 'DV IN' menu setting. Check the DSr-11 doesn't haven't a switch or similar for this (in addition to the source selector referenced in Mooblies latest post).

Also, when selecting different switch options on the DSR-11 (such as the input source selector from S-video to DV), it may need it to be unlinked (ilink cable removed and reconnected while 'off') to initiate another handshake.

Hi everybody!
Far happier this morning!! :-)!
Work this one out...in fact it may clarify the reasons for the Capture Device failure.
So yesterday I needed to start a dfferent project and opened up a ppj that I use like a 'template'. (different from the project I used oher day)
Went to and clicked 'Capture' and up came the window and everything was Hunky Dory!
I then uploaded the video from the same sorce player...nothing wrong at all!!!
I saved and opened the old project that wouldnt let me capture and got the same messages and greyed out recor button!
Answers on a Postcard, please! :-)
Or in a message wil do!
So I have captured the vid, but still non the wiser!
Never mind,
Cheers!

Worth trying an import of the problem project into a clean new one. That might just restore normal operation.

Worth also thinking about re-creating your template project from scratch in case the problem stems from an embedded issue in that somewhere that is triggered only sometimes.

If you are capturing DV, also worth giving Scenalyzer Live a good look. Much better all round for DV capture than Premiere. Try before buy at scenalyzer.com.

I echo David J's first 2 lines.
IME the project settings do not influence imported media, for example:
i)in w/s project, 4:3 media will be captured as defined on media - 4:3.
ii)In HD project, SD media will be captured as SD and not scaled up.
I don't recall trying to capture HD into a SD project though, but looks like we areonly talking SD here.

It does look like squiffy project file, but I'd compare the many projects settings for each - any chance the duff project is set to use a drive which is disabled (unconnected external HD)?
