I've not yet read any comments about this beta editing software pack.
Has anybody tried it and is it any good? Also, is it suitable with all video cards.
John
John,
I tried it, but with very little success. I loaded it first of all onto the computer that I use solely for video editing which has a Miro DC30+ board in it. (There didn't seem much point in trying it in a computer that didn't have a capture board). The computer locked up every time I tried to start Movie Pack. I uninstalled it several times and tried reloading, but it never ever got passed the opening screen.
I then tried loading it into my office computer and it worked there. OK but without an open GL graphics board, everything was very slow and jerky. The interface was all pretty colours but not as intuitive to use as my premiere 4.2. It appeared to be designed more for the individual wanting to produce "snazzy" effects rather than as a work horse. I wasn't too impressed.
I e-mailed Aist about the problems that I had had on one computer but never received a reply. I have now filed the product where I file all my junk mail.
Regards,
Nigel
The only problem I have with it that it has little in the way of instructions, this could be a problem to many users especially users with little experience, which is supposed to be one set of users that AIST aimed their Beta programme at. I do not seem to have had as much trouble as some I ran the Beta in NT4 and now Windows2000 and it works fairly well on my system, even though I cannot seem to get my Open GL oxygen card working with 2000 as there are no drivers yet available. I think that to get the best out of this highly complex piece of software a user has to have had quite a bit of experience with NLE systems, particularly Adobe After Effects, Premier and other fairly sophisticated NLE applications. I think it combines a good many features of much more expensive products (especially for FX) yet is not as easy to 'throw' together a rough cut with.

I will appear to be in a minority here then, because so far I have been able to get AIST beta 3 working fine. I use a P2 300 with 2x Voodoo2 cards in SLi mode, Win 98 and a Matrox Marvel G200 for capturing AVI files.
The effects are very useful and easy to get to grips with, but the management of the windows is a pain in the bum. When moving them around they stretch and pull all over the place trying to auto-lock to the parameters of the windows tha are open.
I would add that Chrome has hit the nail on the head with the lack of instructions.I checked the CD and found a 92 page.pdf Tutorial, and at page 25 it gave an instruction on how to create an effect by pressing button x,y etc. and when I tried, a little message popped up saying that this feature is not yet working. Therefore it was a bit difficult to use the tutorial for next 60+ pages. I am still undecided about whether to buy it, but as it is still at the beta stage it is only fair to give it a fighting chance, bye the way I don't work for them!
'nuff said, Cheers, Neil.
I too have been using the software with the occasional lockup now and then.
I think that it has promise but the lack of a manual or online help (not available until the final release) is a pain. The pfd file is useless and the lack of some features is a major dissapointment.
The final beta release will need to be improved in order for me to buy it at even the beta testers price of £189
