Hi there,
I've searched the noticeboard for entried about the AIWradeon. It will only encode properly at VCD quality. Any higher it tends to drop frames. I presume it's something to do with my computer setup which is as follows.

Athlon 1000
128Mb Ram
13Gb 5200 Hard Disk UDMA66
MSI K7t Pro 2a mainboard
All in Wonder Radeon
Windows 98 se

Any help would be greatly appreciated. What do I do

I want to know which parts I should upgrade by the way, to give me the best capture quality possible

I have the same problem with my AIW 128 Pro. I can capture Mpeg 1 and low data-rate Mpeg 2, but at anything over about 2000 Kbits/Sec, I drop more than 1% of the frames. Since I have a 1.2 DDR Athlon with 256MB of DDR RAM and a 7200RPM hard drive, I doubt that my computer is the problem. I understand that the whatever-you-call-it that does the encoding for the AIW Radeon and the 128 Pro are the same, so I guess may not be capable of higher quality encoding, even though the settings go up as high as 8000 Kbits/Sec.

Has anyone been able to capture Mpeg 2 at, say, 4000 Kbit/Sec or higher without dropping frames?

Thanks for your posting. It saved me from getting a AIW Radeon.

Windows 2000 & the ATI 2000 drivers make a real difference.

2 hours TV at 640x 576, 8000 Kbit/Sec & NO dropped frames. <1% if I go on the internet or play back the TV full screen at the same time.

AIW 128 16MB, 700 Celereon, 256MB RAM, 40GB Maxtor 5400rpm (Seperate video capture disk).

I can't edit the bloody thing succesfully though?

I can create a new video file but I have no save audio (option) with MSP6. Even if I make an AVI there's no audio???? The original capture does have audio & plays fine.

MSP6 Project settings

PAL (25 fps)
Frame-based
Overlay track(s):3
MPEG Files
24 Bits, 640 x 576, 25 fps
(MPEG-2)
Video Data Rate 8000 Kbps
Audio Data Rate 256 Kbps
Layer 2, 44.1 kHz, Stereo

btw there is no ATI Video editor in 2000.

I use the ADS Pyro & my TRV 120 as a Analogue to Digital convertor for top quality stuff which it is possible to edit.

Cheers for the replies. But why is it dropping frames. The publicity and the ATI sales person guaranteed it would do 720x576(or whatever it is) at 25 frames a second.

Do I need to upgrade my 128Mb of Ram or perhaps my 5200 UDMA66 hard drive. Or are they simply liars (if they are I WILL contact trading standards and Watchdog).

I don't have money to chuck around for £1000 or even £500 capture cards. It's not that I don't want to, it's that I can't What do I do?

There are bound to be members who know more about this than I do, but this is my opinion, for what it is worth. The key is not the resolution or fps, but the data rate. Try a video data rate setting of 2000 KBits/Sec and see if it works. As I said in my first posting, I suspect that the card is just not capable of higher data rates.

Out of curiousity, I tried capturing Mpeg 2 at higher data rates than I had done before. After making sure that I had all other programs closed and restarting my computer to clear out the memory, I was able to capture an hour of 720 x 480 Mpeg 2 at a 4000 Kbit/Sec video data rate with a file size of 1.8GB without dropping any frames. However, when I tried recording at 8000 Kbits/Sec, I almost immediately began dropping frames. As I stated before, I have a 1.2Ghz Athlon with 256MB DDR RAM and a 7200RPM dedicated video drive. More RAM needed?

I have partially solved the problem. I have a VIA KT133 chipset and have upgraded the 4 in1 drivers to 4.31v.

I can now capture using the 'good quality' profile (and that's at 8Mbits/sec) rather than just Video CD quality. Perhaps you have a VIA chipset and that's what you need to do.

I will be emailing ATI for some help.
