Anyone using ATI All in Wonder 128 successfully under Windows ME (at all)?

I'm having a hard time getting anywhere with this ATI card under Win ME, even though I downloaded the updated drivers - all 13.5MB!!

In some situations the PC locks up - a little while into Win ME's start up.

After a Safe Mode start, in which I have to cut back the resolution and colours and acceleration to enable WinME to start normally, the resolution is 640x480 at 16-bit colour. As I increase the resolution, the colour depth drops down until it is only 16 colours (or ist 266) when I reach 1024 x 768.

I suspect (and hope) that the problem is as a result of my not having the correct control software.

We've mislaid the CD (but I'm not blaming Peter Wells for this at all) which contained the original drivers and the control software, including TV players etc.

Having realised that this was NOT in the 13.5MB download, I shrugged and went to get it from ATI's site, only to learn that this is only available on CD and is chargeable "for copyright reasons".

Anyone able to burn me a CD of the whole thing and whack it over to me at our editorial offices?

This will save me from having to kill a completely blameless Peter Wells, which would be cutting off my own nose to spite my face, but would still have to be done, nonetheless.

(Second thoughts, I'll just steal the Panasonic DV VCR he has bought and paid for but not had delivered. Then I'll have to kill him.)

i have had the ati working successfully under ME with the enhanced drivers supplied with mine (which gives extra choices within display adapter properties). It worked fine, what i did find is that ME crashes A LOT, nothing to do with the ATI as it's supported by ME , microsoft state this in their ME supported hardware section. ME is nothing but a dressed up 98 and is a lot slower than 98, it eats memory and is overall very unstable. I installed a dc30+ on it and ME spat it out, it didn't work very well at all, i'm not a newbie i've had plenty of experience with o/s systems and capture cards and went staright back to 98 phew glad thats all over, i've got 2000 on a seperate disk using boot magic it's a lot better than mE and supports more software, ME's got a lot of problems with it and i refuse to be a guinea pig for bill gates! MY guess is thta it's ME and not your ati card mine works so why not yours?

Jezz,

I was pretty much coming to the conclusion that I was going to start over again with 98SE.

Any chance, though, that you could burn me a copy of the install CD?

Whether I'm running ME or 98, I think I'm on a hiding to nothing without the CD.

Cheers

Hi Bob.
Like yourself I to have lots of problems with Widows ME, most of the probs are with the display card (ATI all in wonder pro)(not the 128 version) numorous crashes, loss of memory, and major problems with my isp (AOL). Also the new media player will not play the same mpeg disks that the earlier version played quite happily. One thing that convinced me to uninstall ME was that my hard disk space was being used up very rapidly for no apparant reason, anyway to cut a very long story short, everything is working back to normal now, no crashes, AOL is ok,etc now i'm using Win 98 SE again.
A warning to those thinking of treading the Win ME path, be prepared for lots of hassle, after all why else would Mr Gates and co offer it for half price???.

Regards Henry.

Bob,

I'll call into the office tomorrow and dig out the CD, although I'm certain it'll be in one of the CD boxes.

So much for being on holiday!

Don't be a twit!

1/ I'm not there tomorrow

2/ You are on holiday

3/ You won't find it - I looked VERY thoroughly, which is how I discovered some odd stuff in your bottom drawer (more of which in my blackemail).

4/ Someone here is bound to have it and burn a copy for me.

Now get on with your holiday stuff - pruning the cat, stroking the roses, stuff like that.

Or is it that you have some ulterior motive for wishing to visit the offices in your holidays?

Bob,
Not sure if this will be totally relevant but I was recently sent a CD update of ATI drivers for my Rage Pro 128. Once installed, it had exactly the same syptoms you described: locking up part way through the boot process. However, I was using Win 98SE! When I booted up using bootlog it seemed that the boot process was stalling after the lines:
Starting ATI Rage 128 GL SD AGP (PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5246&SUBSYS_00081002&REV_00\000800)
[0011D658] Dynamic load device ATI_VXAA.VXD
[0011D659] Dynamic init device ATI_VXAA
[0011D659] Dynamic init success ATI_VXAA
[0011D659] Dynamic load success ATI_VXAA.VXD and just before the line:
[0011D680] Started ATI Rage 128 GL SD AGP (PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5246&SUBSYS
I have now uninstalled the ATI drivers, installed Win ME and am using the Microsoft supplied ATI drivers which work fine.
Interestingly, though the freeze on boot up only seemed to happen after the PC had been off for several hours; an immediate hard reboot seemed to get passed the freeze point!
Sadly, I have no idea why but have emailed ATi support; as yet, no answer!

David,

Thanks for this info.

Are you able to change the colour and resolution properly?

I'm in a position where I can't get better than 640x480 at 16-bit colour!

Cheers

Problem over!

I found the ATI software and installed it.

But no difference!

I uninstalled Win ME, installed 98SE, and bingo! All working as intended.

Now all I've got to do is figure out why the TMC board I've been using won't start up with the K6-2 400MHz process I've just put in it in place of a K6 200MHz.

Hi again Bob.
I rest my case!!!. I am glad that you have seen the light, there is something seriously wrong with Windows ME, this old computer (homebrew 225mhz K6) skips along quite happilly again now its back to Win98 SE, never did have any probs with that operating system. I have tried Win ME on another computer in the "shack" (Supermarket Special, PIII 500 mhz, 128 MB ram) which I use for video, even that had installation probs, it asked for a file that was available on the net, unfortunatly I do not allow that computer access to the net, so had to obtain file with this PC on a floppy, when the PIII had suitably digested the floppies contents Win ME fully installed itself, guess what?, similar problems repeated, the promise of more rapid boot ups did not materialise, same prob with Windows media player, and that video editing utility that comes with Win ME is YUK !!! talk about slow, words fail me!!!, any body want a cheap copy of ME or shall I use it for a usefull purpose, a coaster for my coffee cup??.

PS. Do like the Still digital photagraphy forum, thanks.

Regards Henry.
