I need to rename/number multiple images for use in a new folder. I have hundreds, so individual renaming is going to be laborious - Can this function be automated?

windows
start a dos screen
start>run>cmd

to rename 1 you use
rename abcde1234.tif elephant.tif
so for a lot of them
rename abcde*.tif elephant*.tif

or using adobe photoshop elements , tell it to load all the files you want from folder one and convert to same file in folder2 , where it will rename with numbers from 001

file > batch processing
files to convert > folder
file renaming > document name + 3 digit serial number
set destination directory

and just found this , all in one simple > http://www.exifpro.com/Help/ToolTransfer.htm

If your using XP

Highlight all the files, then type the following format

Name(#).JPG Picture(1).jpg

where #=number 1.
I have tried 001 instead of 1 but it did not work for me as this would sequence correctly in the windows folder.

be care full as windows in it wisdom files things strangely with numbers so your sequence could appear to be out

eg.
1, 11, 10,100,
2, 22, 20

"CKRename" from http://www.musicsucks.com/CKSoft/index.htm

Two more:

a. "TheRename" - http://www.herve-thouzard.com/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=1 - recommended!

b. Ulead Photo Explorer (I've got a paid for, invaluable, version - there used to be an older, free version too)

Both have flexible, powerful batch renaming options.

(Exifer - http://www.friedemann-schmidt.com/software/exifer/ - is another very useful image utility - particularly where two or more people in a group have their clocks set wildly differently and you're trying to compensate!)

As far as I am concerned the best program is BRU - Bulk Rename Utility, I use this a lot. I use canons DPP for extracting raw, this renames with the DPP prefix on conversion, so I need to rename them again, into something more appropiate.

Its a small 606kb download, Available here:

http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php.

When I checked the url to see it worked - I found the program was updated yesterday.
This is freeware, but you can send a donatiion.

It opens a "explorer" type window where that you see all the folders etc - double click...

There are 12 different catogries, available for editting.
RegEx
File
Replace
Remove
Add
Auto-Date
Append Folder
Numbering (+/-) Start from any No etc
Extension
Selections
New Location

I also use DoubleKiller (392kb) to search out any duplicate files on the hard drives, I might have left when renaming.

I will agree with David P, on Exifer its great for different times zones

Hope these help.

You missed one! ;)

Paint Shop Pro has had a scripting feature since Vn7 so it can be done that way or in the latest version (Corel PSP X) it's part of the standard batch processes. Includes batch resizing etc.

Sadly it's not free like most of the other tools.

And another one called Irfanview. It's free, simple to use, has a very easy interface, stable, quick to load and process, and for a free program is relatively powerful. I always use it for batch processing images when renaming or resizing. Here is the link to the website:

Irfanview is BRILLIANT for batch resizing files. I typically take a whole bundle of (big) files from the camera, and crunch them down for distribution/slideshow use to (say) 1400x1050, or whatever the max screen res I'm likely to show them on, is. Uniquely you can define an "envelope" like this (id different height and width), and resize as necessary. Brilliant.

all those other progs are for people who have yet to encounter irfanview, IMHO
