I'm new to this hobby and have been browsing this board all afternoon.

Most of my videos tend to be short (less than 15 mins) and currently send the finished output back to tape via the Premier time line and then transfer to VHS via my JVC DV Camera.

Is it possible to make an AVI and then burn this to a CD-R (or CD-RW) in DVD format so that it effetively produces a short film in full DVD quality on my Awia 370 DVD player. If so what software / convertors / compressors do I need and are they freely downloadable.

TIA

Malcolm

1. Download TMPGenc FREE
2. Press the VIDEO button and load your AVI
3. Press the LOAD button and load the DVD template
4. Press START and render to DVD(for the ultimate quality adjust "motion picture search" to HIGHEST QUALITY(slowest)
5. Now download SPRUCE UP
6. Go here http://www.vcdhelp.com/spruceup.htm

any problems e mail me

I just made a 16min cDVD(mini DVD) and it was 628mb in size and it looks gorgeous!

When using SPRUCE UP dont let it burn the PLAYER(or the SPRUCE UP trial) as it does NOT work properly and cannot be fixed without buying 3rd party sware!

Now your talking Malcolm, if you only need 14 mins on a cd then you can easily make a full DVD format mpeg2 file which will fit on a 700MB cd. But and it's a very big but, will your DVD player play it. You need to try it and see, I suggest that you output a 2min DV avi file from your NLE programme and load this into TMPGenc (download a free sample from www.tmpgenc.net) and try encoding at a constant bit rate of 4000, then try 5000, 6000 and 6500kbps. Copy these files to a cdRW and try it in your player. If the bit rate is too fast the player may not want to know or the video or sound will skip. I use 6500kbps and get 14 mins on a cd with absolutely brillant quality.

Give it a try. If your player will not play these miniDVD's you could try SVCD which is lower resolution and lower datarate but is more compatible with DVD players.

Best wishes

Andy
