Does anyone know if these suffer from the memory effect...i.e. do they have to be fully discharged before re-charging or can I simply top up after having used for a short period.....The manual is a bit vague. The battery is Li-ion

Been running my batteries now for the last 3 years with no problems no matter what state of capacity they are in. I just charge up all of them before every shoot.

I don't believe anything I read about new techno advances - including Li-Ion not suffering from memory effects - but if they do suffer memory effects it is dramatically less than NiCad. I have 930 batteries for my XL1 and when I have topped up a half-discharged battery it doesn't seem to have performed any worse than a fully discharged one after charging.

I completely abuse the 4500mah compatable canon batteries and I have had great use from them. I very rarely run them down past 50% remaining, but on the odd occasion I do run them low they perform flawlessly and for a damned long time.
