Just look at this ranking of camera sensor performance - which shows the clear positive correlation between the modernity of a sensor's design and its performance. Also the smaller the chip, the less chance you have of ever competing with the big boys.

nice find. :)
And nice how you can just click on Canon (say) and see that range all in order.

I think you have to be very carefull when looking at these specs as the image quality is based on the raw data coming from the sensor and some manufacturers don't appear to provide real raw images as they appear to have some noise reduction and compression in their raw files and then there are the folks who only require jpg's, straight out of the camera, this could lead to a completely different set of league leaders.
The single biggest measurement on there that surprised me was the relatively cheap as chips Fuji S5 pro, 13.5 stops of dynamic range, that is very impressive for a camera that costs less than £500 and uses a Nikon made body (D200 body) and a Nikon lense mount, this would be an excellent camera for a wedding photographer.
Cheers John
That is a sweet site thanks for the link.
I'm not upgrading for a while though, Canon 450D should last me for at least 4-5 years with the amount of still photos I take..
My wee Canon G9 comes well down the scale there but can't complain, you get what you pay for.
Cheers.
