I am having trouble capturing DV using a new external Harddrive . I have a Western Digital external firewire connected HDD to my Fujitsu Laptop and capture& edit using premiere6.5 and Win XP.
I have selected this HDD as capture and scratch disc, created a file to capture to, and windows recognizes this. The capture starts as normal , but after approx 500 frames , the capture window freezes, the camera is still playing, and I get screen message “unable to write data - save file to different drive “ Premiere resets capture disk to driveC
The external drive then seems to “disappear†and windows cannot recognise it anymore†and I have to switch it off and restart it again . The External HDD seems to be writing other types of file from my driveC , so I doubt a hardware fault .
Help, what am I doing wrong?
how many firewire connectors on your pc ?
how are hard drive and camera connected , i.e in what order to what connections ?
Gary
There is only one firewire on the pc, 2 on the Ext Hd. The conections are pc to ext hd, ext hd to DV camera for capture .Device control works with this setup.
i have found that routing a camera thru an external hard drive is not very helpfull.
the bandwidth isn't always enough to allow capture from camera to the hard-drive.
it may work a lot better with a pcmcia firewire card.
