Does anyone know if you can purchase DV Tape Labels so that I can print suitable labels.

Not sure of the precise details, but I'd be surprised if there isn't an Avery label that would do it. I've got an Avery wizard installed at home, so I'll try measuring the face and spine labels and see if there's anything that will do, probably this afternoon.

Sorry, couldm't find anything in the Avery wizard. My copy is about a year old, so there may be new ones by now. It might be worth checking. I'll see what I can find.

Try Avery J8657 "inkjet 35mm slide" labels. They are 46 x 11.11mm and fit (Sony) mini-DV cassettes fine vertically, if a tad too wide (but they stay put). Also OK for the tape box label. Very economical at 42 per sheet.

Very easy to format and line up accurately with Avery LabelPro. Tried Avery DesignPro but found it the most user-hostile program I've ever used and have reverted to LabelPro!

Good idea, I hadn't thought of using those. And I endorse your comments about the Avery software, iut really is awful. I use the Word templates, it's far easier to drive.

Get my test cards document, and cards for 625, 525, 720 and 1080. Thanks to Gavin Gration for hosting them.
Camera settings documents are held by Daniel Browning and at the EBU
My book, 'Circles of Confusion' is available here.
Also EBU Tech.3335 tells how to test cameras, and R.118 tells how to use the results.

You could also try the computer labels,65 to a sheet,size 38.1mm x 21.2mm.

Sorry i don't know the Avery number, the one's i got from local paper shop were by www.southfield-stationers.co.uk £3.15 for a 15 sheet pack.

Alan F & Alan R have you downloaded the Avery patch for Word 97 onwards,it works a treat.

Yes, I think that's the one I use. I select the Avery icon in Word and it lets me pick the label sheet, then goes through data entry for the sheet or label by label, then quits leaving me in Word with a layout of the labels that I can still edit. It's orders of magnitude better than Avery's own stand-alone software.

Charles - where do you get the Word97 patch from - I'll give it a try. Having invested in the learning curve for Avery LabelPro (quite old by today's standards) I quite like it as a stand-alone labeller.

Like AlanR, I decided however that life is too short to get DesignPro to do anything useful - like for example use its menu item to convert an LabelProd database to DesignPro without trashing the former, like printing one label of a database and not the whole lot, and too may more foibles to bother with!

If you go to http://www.avery.co.uk/uk/prod_catalog/software/wizard.html
you can download it.

As Alan at work says,it makes labels a piece of cake.

The Avery add-on for Word sounded interesting but, having tried it, am I right in thinking that it will not print (in one pass), say, three identical labels in the middle of a part-used sheet?

It will print a single label anywhere on a sheet, or it will print a full sheet of identical labels, but the very feature needed for short runs seems to be missing.

At present I use Labels Unlimited, which has this feature and makes best use of any label sheet.

It will print any number of labels, at any location on new or part-used sheets. I do this often.

E.g. I enter the data for a single label using the wizard and then quit the wizard. I'm now back in Word, with the page divided up into label cells, and just one filled. I go to that label, and select all the text. Copy or Cut it, and Paste it into any empty label cell. Edit, add to or delete any part of any label, or just write new labels anywhere on the sheet. Then Print. A piece of cake.

Thanks for the download URL, Charles - I've tried the Avery wizard and it seems fine and very useful for basic text labels. However, I like to add logos etc, especially to video cassette face and spine labels; the very old Avery LabelPro supports drag-and-drop and produces good results. So I thought their latest DesignPro would be even-more-wonderful ("it must be better if you have to pay for it" - LabelPro was free) - wrong! - DesignPro is AWFUL! Avery should have used the same programmers that wrote their wizards...

LabelPro also supports Ray's requirement to print an number of labels starting anywhere on a sheet.

Alan, I routinely add logos after using the wizard. In the extreme, I use the wizard only to select the label sheet. All the usually formatting of Word still applies inside each label, plus vertical centering. No problem.

Thanks, Alan - I'll give it a more thorough workout!
