I can see the benefit of DVD-RAM disks with cartridges (protection, etc), but don't understand why in player/burner reviews a machine is judged to either accept or not accept cartidge enclosed disks - without pointing out that the cartridges have a lid that opens allowing them to be used on ALL machines (that accept ram disks) - or am I missing something?
.... I know the protection aspect is lost each time the disk is removed from the cartridge, but in my case I am happy with protection for storage and transit only.
There are three types of DVD-RAM discs:
1. Bare DVD-RAM discs;
2. DVD-RAM discs that come in cartridges that can be removed;
3. DVD-RAM discs that come in cartridges that can't be removed.
If you visit the Optodisc Web page at the following link...
http://www.optodisc.com/product.html
You'll see a link "DVD-RAM CARTRIDGE INFORMATION."
Click that link and you'll see the various "types" of cartridges listed and explained.
As not all DVD-RAM cartridges can be removed, the drives that do not support cartridged DVD-RAM media cannot be used with certain specific types of DVD-RAM discs.
I have compiled an informal list of computer drive models that support DVD-RAM.
Not all of these drives will support the DVD-RAM disc types where the cartridge cannot be removed.
1. Panasonic SW-9571 (internal older model; accepts cartridged DVD-RAM discs)

2. Panasonic SW-9572 (internal newer model; accepts cartridged DVD-RAM discs)

3. Panasonic SW-9572 (external newer model; accepts cartridged DVD-RAM discs)

4. Panasonic SW-9582 (internal newer model; but doesn't accept cartridged DVD-RAM discs)

5. LG GSA-4040B (internal; burns to all formats, but doesn't accept cartridged DVD-RAM discs)

6. LG GSA-4040B (external; burns to all formats, but doesn't accept cartridged DVD-RAM discs)

The other reason why I like to use drives that support cartridged DVD-RAM discs is the time savings.
I don't have to physically remove the disc from a cartridge.
Hope this helps,

but with no cover you can't just lay it down for a couple of seconds while i swap disks , and the outer cover is great for marking side a / b , so that i can remember which side i've already recorded to.

Thank guys for the info and education - I had never seen or brought 'fixed' cartridges so thought they did not exist. It does mean I shall have to be extra careful in future when buying cartridged disks that they are the open type.
