Bob , i may have missed it , but , are you reviewing edius2 for the next issue ?
reason being i've just started using it for some student work and found that mpeg editing on timeline is fun , though very processor intensive.
also procoder express for edius is almost as powerful for day to day jobs as procoder full.
Gary,
It's scheduled for the issue we are working on now - June (on sale end of April) - and is pretty positive.

Hi Gary
You may have seen the thread I started on the Canopus forum re. the timeline cursor not starting immediately the spacebar is pressed. The buffer fills erratically and takes nearly 3 seconds to fill up to 160 and then the cursor moves. Meanwhile, the video is playing OK in the monitor window.
Canopus and others have suggested my PC is underpowered, but if I play an mpeg file on the timeline there is no delay at all. The buffer fills smoothly. From your statement above, that leads me to think that my PC is not that underpowered and the problem lies elsewhere.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this when you have time. Many thanks
John
i have seen what you are talking about , but only occasionally and on if i stack the timeline with multiple tracks.
since output works and i have worked out how to pre-render the bad bits , it doesn't annoy me that much.
i prefer the stuttering to premiere crashes.
i'm busy rebuilding my edit room ( not equipment ) so won't get a real chance to play with edius2 until monday.
if you tell me what you need on the timeline to create this problem , i'll try and replicate exactly.
Thanks Gary.
In my setup as below I only have to place a single avi file (Canopus DV- any length down to a few seconds) on the timeline to get this cursor delay. Nothing else, no filters etc. Just the avi file.
Pressing the spacebar should get the timeline cusor moving immediately, but I have a delay while the buffer fills very jerkily. Once the buffer reaches 160 the cursor moves. Meanwhile, the video had already been playing in the monitor window so the cursor jumps to the point in the timeline where the video is playing i.e about 3 seconds down the timeline.
This does not happen with a mpeg file. i.e the buffer fills immediately and smoothly and plays with the video.
I ran the PremPro trial (no Canopus drivers for the Storm2) and the timeline in that played immediately as it does with MovieMaker. Edius 1.5 also played OK after a delay of about 1/2 second. I have disabled every piece of software, disconnected all USB connections to no avail. I should add that there are a few others, not many, who also experience this and it does not seem to relate to the cpu power. One guy even had the problem with just XP Pro and Edius2.0 on his system.
Edius never crashes on me, has never dropped frames and I have edited a 3hr project with no problems. I just think there is something wrong with the way Edius 2.0 handles memory. I await your further thoughts with interest and, in the meantime, have a good Easter break.
John
ok
new timeline
load a single avi of 13 minutes
press space
instant playback
if i use a timeline with filters etc i get initial pause as buffers fill , and timeline jumps every so often , but no real grief.
i am feeding video from a raid array , i don't feed from the system drive attached to main board , that definately fouls up
Thanks Gary
My video is coming from a second, video only drive, not a raid. With Edius 1.0-1.5 I never got a pause as long as the buffer was above 0 and the timeline cursor never jumped.
I know its no 'real grief' but v2.0 is supposed to be better than v1.* and I just feel something is wrong in the way v2.0 handles the buffer.
Anyway,thanks for your time.
John
wil check my settings to see if i have 'enabled or disabled a toggle' somewhere
Hi Gary
Have you been able to check your toggle settings? And if so, did you find anything?
TIA
John
i'll go thru all my settings tomorrow morning , snapshot them and put links here to the pictures.
sorry i've had a bad 2 days at work , 12 hours work needed in a 8 hour day ..........
pay a visit to
http://www.avtech.demon.co.uk/photos where there are 6 screen grabs of the various settings my machine is set to.
Thank you for your time and trouble Gary. That is greatly appreciated but my settings were not far off yours. However, I did change mine to exactly the same as yours but that made no difference.
Perhaps this has some bearing on the case. I ran Task Manager with Edius. While the buffer is trying to fill (I say "tying" as it does not fill smoothly as it did in Edius 1.0) the CPU usage goes to 100% and then drops to about 15% once the buffer has filled and the cursor is moving.
I wonder why the CPU is being used to 100% when the buffer is on the Storm card? But perhaps I don't have a grasp of the technicalities of the situation.
Thanks again
John
my understanding is:
the buffer is system memory , it flood fills it then uses it to allow rapid playback of normal frames while it renders troublesome ones.
my twin xeon does the same , where processors go into overdrive to load buffer then settle down.
OK Garry. Thank you again for your time. I guess I will have to live with a jerky cursor.
Regards
John
