Following a review in Computer Video magazine last year I went and bought the Epson 900 primarily for CD/DVD disc printing facility. Although i'm quite happy with its paper print performance its CD/DVD printing is mostly off center and off the mark, making the disk look shoddy.
The Computer Video Magazine review of the R200 does not specifically say if this is completely fixed.
Has anyone tried this printer? I'm looking for a replacement for Epson 900 to primarily do CD/DVD prints and need one that performs all the time.
I do not need to do multiple copies, only occassional single discs.
I know someone who bought an R300 recently, pretty much the same printer, only has card slot.
He is amazed at print quality and he sent me a DVD with on-body print and it looked pretty damn good to me, except when I licked my finger and dragged it across the DVD it smudged big-time, but this could be down to the Verbatim so-called printable surface.
I have just ordered one, even though they suck up ink like a Ferrari sucks up petrol. I also have a laser printer for doing just my B&W work.
For the record I saw the R200 on Kelkoo.co.uk today for just £79.94, check it our here:
Yeah, i've just taken delivery of its bigger brother the R300. The quality is fantastic. It takes about 2 mins to print a disc. You will have to buy some protector spray to spray the discs with though to protect and stop the ink smudging. I've ordered 5 bottles from www.riverproaudio.c.uk. Thing is following a recent review in August's CV they are out of stock.
Regards
Gary
thanks r u saying that either the R200 or R300 work better than the epson 900?
Smudging can be taken care of... what i'm concerned is that the print on the cd/dvd disc should not be off center or look lopsided.
Hi
I don't have off-centre problems with my 900, although you have to be precise in aligning the marks on the tray when inserting it into the printer. The software (Mac OS9 in my case) gives 99% repeatable stability in the positioning.
The big advantage of the 900 is that it uses the colour cartridge of Epson's A3 printer range, so you get 66ml of ink for about £18 (or less). The 200/300/500 range has 5 seperate 13ml colour ink cartridges @ about £12 (or less) each....
I have a 900 and print hundreds and hundreds of discs (that's all it prints) and it almost always prints dead centre. I've had it a year and had to calibrate it twice in that time when it's slipped.
I won't pay Epson ridiculous original ink prices for non-colour critical work, but get compatible cartridges for next to nothing from www.choicestationery.co.uk, who I see do the individual colours for R200 for less than £ 4 each if you buy multiples.
the r 200 and r300 are both exerlent the only diffr\ace is the card reader.
some people seem to have had problems with the disk tray but I havent had that problem. the print qulity is exerlent and I havent had a problem with smuging.
pauld i'm a bit surprised that you have no problem with your 900. I always get off centered dvd prints on mine.
How do you align the tray and what setting for width and height do u have in epson print cd?
Mark M,should the link be www.choicestationery.com ? Tony C.

Hi
There are a row of marks on the tray that have to be exactly placed underneath the corresponding/matching plastic lugs to align the tray. This takes care, but isn't difficult, and if done properly results in consistent printing.
To get exact centering I have had to set an offset of 1.2/1.5mm in the software, and tweak the centre ring diameter slightly.
I did this setup by sticking labels on the cardboard test ring that came with the printer until I got it right.

Well, yes and no: I just needed to spell "stationery" correctly! both .co.uk and .com work!
Just took delivery of R200 today. Using Mac OSX Panther, didn't even have to install drivers, printed to DVD disc perfectly, didn't even have to calabrate either.
Print quality is superb.
Which magazine, gave the R800 10/10 for print quality
