I have been for a while wanting to build up a set up that enables me to do live green screen.

I have done various projects up to now using green screen, but its all done in the edit, i film against the screen, replace the background in the edit.

what i want to do is do the keying live. subject stood against green screen, but sees themselves on a monitor with the replaced background.

is there any software for mac that will do this? or any hardware that people recommend?

hope that all makes sense

Paul

EDIT- this is by the way a total coincidence with the apprentice episode that has just been on!!

ala 'The apprentice'. Holdan do a live mixer with screen output/record I think :)

Otherwise I think the Tricaster will do the same thing.

Serious Magic Ultra, now part of Adobe CS5 may do what you want.

http://www.thedvshow.com/10-tools-for-live-chroma-keying/ Lots of different options in software.

There are a few old prosumer vision mixers which do live chromakey - the Panasonic MX50 can be found in a skip round the back of an Av hire company and does a fairly rubbish job of keying! The Edirol V4 also does chroma. These mixers are good enough for a preview to aid with composition but you wouldn't want to use it in the final edit.

Datavideo do a live keying box which is better, not as good as the better software keyers but OK. Ultimatte hardware is the industry standard for live keying and they do a wide range of units ranging from expensive to savagely expensive!

I think the only thing that did live keying from adobe was Ultra Studio CS3 - its been dropped from CS4+

http://www.zachpoff.com/software/chroma-key-live/ is worth a look as its free :)

If anyone does find an MX-50 in a skip I could do with a few spare parts. :) ;) :)

Thanks Paul and Dave,

I bid on the better of the two but they went for silly money.

That's the one that is a grey cloth with glass beads and blue/green ring LED on camera.
The holdan/data video box IIRC is optionally used for live use (e.g.sales girl water skiing at videoforum ). I saw one listed in the last week in a Broadcast gear auction email (that's the box - not the girl ;) ).
I've deleted it now, but maybe you've had the same - or auction is perhaps advertised on TV bay website somewhere.
Bear in mind the glass beads could be damaged if walked on - more usually used as back cloth.

The cloth + LED ring replace the traditional greenscren and loads of lighting.

the hardware keyer box works with both traditional and reflective LED keying.

you can get a floor mat of the reflective stuff which is ok to walk / stand on.

I have the Datavideo one, but not the live keyer output. The keying is exceptionally good and the LED ring can switch either green or blue depending on the subject.

Windows PC only however Vidblaster will do live keying although it's a bit limited as it's a newer feature of the software.

Also this program needs a very fast computer so be sure to install it on a powerhouse machine.

Thinking about it, I've an idea Archaos Grand VJ might just do it. It has Chroma key but I've no idea how good it is.

yes lots of VJ software will do live chromakey, mostly with quite poor results, though they might be good enough for preview purposes.

visualjockey.com is free (pc only) and does live chromakey from a capture card input.
one the mac you can use quartz composer (free from apple with the developer tools) to create a live chromakey effect. http://www.quartzcompositions.com/phpBB2/upload/details.php?file=2781
