According to the review of MGI Videowave II in the latest CV, this program can capture/convert to MPEG-2, and also edit MPEG-2. However, MGI make no mention at all of MPEG-2 ability on their web site, they only mention MPEG-1.
Can it edit MPEG-2 files?
Chris,
MGI VideoWave II has a software MPEG-2 encoder, meaning that you can save your finished project as an MPEG-2 file.
Capture format still depends on the card used - in the case of this review, it was a DC30 plus capturing M-JPEG AVIs.
The outputted MPEG-2 is not I-frame, and is, therefore, not ideal for video editing. It's better just used as an output format.

I purchased VWII a few weeks ago. With regards to MPEG 2 you have to send off seperately for this which can take 8 - 10 weeks. As soon as I have got it and tried it I will post something to this site.
With regards to price I managed to purchase it from Software Warehouse Birmingham for £58.
Chris
I can only endorse what Peter Wells wrote that the MPEG-2 is an output option only...though a very important and useful one.

The VWII I examined was the latest version and had the MPEG-2 sticker on it. The price quoted was the recommended retail price...I am glad you found one cheaper...perhaps it was an older version and that is why you had to send off for the MPEG-2 upgrade.

Thanks for clearing that up guys.
Chris.

I confirmed with MGI that the version I had was the most upto date, plus the box illustrated in your article was identical to mine.
They did though at first try to sell me the first version, Videowave, for £70 which they had had lying around for a while and it was only because I knew VWII was out that I asked how much that was expecting it to be more, but was pleasantly suprised to find it only £58. They could not explain the price difference.

My box had a very very faint label on it which said 'now with MPEG-2 encoder'. I nearly missed checking it until Peter Wells asked me about MPEG-2 output. As I said it is not mentioned in the manual. It does however just mention it in the readme file. The version I have is ver.2.02 If you click on the MGI name on the main menu it will tell you which version you have. Hope you get your upgrade soon. I don't like to ask but have you checked your output parameters to make sure MPEG-2 is not there! No disrespect...I nearly missed it.

I still haven't got the MPEG 2 update but there again they did say 8 - 10 weeks. My version is 2.0, and on discussion with MGI helpdesk (of which there is only one line and one person answering all European queries) they confirmed it was the most recent, and I can't see any upgrades on their site either. That aside, I am not sure what you mean by output parameters because when I go to output the only option I get is full screen. and then I merely click the begin button and press record on my VCR.
Therefore is this what ATI were driving at when they said you can't output with the All In Wonder via Videowave II as it is not supported, and therefore what I am recording is merely my computer screen and not the file itself, therefore resulting in poor quality.
Any thoughts.

Sorry you have not got your upgrade yet. But mine was/is version 2.02...perhaps it was a preview version. The output parameters were in produce video/change settings advanced/file types. Have you tried this method to save your movie then play it back using another viewer.
