I have a SONY Mini DV camcorder and I cannot connect to my PC for DVD burning. The PC (Windows XP) does not 'see' the camcorder when I connect the firewire cable. I tried it with my friend's Canon camcorder and it connected instantly. So I know it cant be the PC or cable; it must be an issue with the camcorder. Anyone here have similar problems? Any solutions?
Thanks,
Steve:mad:
Have you tried it the other way round Steve - connecting your Sony to his pc? If the Sony isn't recognised there either, it's time for a complaint.
If we both have Windows XP (which we do), should it matter? I assume my PC is OK because his camcorder connected right away, so I assume my firewire settings and cable  are good...........or am I assuming too much?
the only bit that doesn't work for you is the camcorder.
BUT
does that mean the camcorder is faulty ? or that it just doesn't like your pc ?
if you connect your camcorder to his pc and it works ... camera is ok
if it doesn't .... there is a high chance the camcorder is faulty.
you also don't know if all settings on both pc's are identical , and one slight change may make a difference.
have you
1. disabled firewire networking ?
2. disabled firewall on firewire networking ?
I have both firewires disabled.............................what was that last suggestion?
firewire should be enabled , but firewire networking disabled.
you need to check windows firewall and check it isn't firewalling the firewire (ieee1394) connections.
Im confused...........................here is what I have NOW:
1394 Net adapter disabled
1394 Net adapter #2 disabled\
Intel Pro 100 network connection enabled (for the intenet)
Firewire networking is a computer-to-computer network system just as Ethernet, you need to disable it for camcorder operations to work. If this networking is enabled, the PC's trying to find another PC rather than a camcorder.
thanks alan .......
Where do I find Firewire networking on the device mgr?
Your camera could be faulty. Eliminate this by checking the camera on a different PC.
I have at least one camera that has to have the 4 pin firewire cable pushed in really firmly in order to connect.
Both Tom and Gary have already said that, we're all waiting for a report on that test.
The camcorder wasnt seen on another PC either. I cant imagine why all the functions on the camcoder work fine except uploading video to a DVD burner via firewire...............I am at a LOSS...........................and very frustrated..................

so the camera is probably faulty as we suggested .... it's firewire port may be damaged or never working from day 1.
OK, so now you know that there's a fault on the camera. Time to visit a proper repair shop.
