Apart from the fact that the larger vx9000 "looks the part" and uses full size tape, does anyone know: 1. how these two compare picture wise? 2.Does the vx9000 have a svhs-out? 3.How bad is the "hiss"sound I have heard about on the vx9000? 4. How much do the tapes for the vx9000 cost and can they be re-used?
Has anyone used both and if so which do they recommend as they are very close on price?
Thanks
The analogue outputs (S & Composite) on the 9000 are poor but the actual material is fine when sent via firewire or played off a DV/DVcam deck.
The hiss is bad with built in mic. External mics are very clean but not perfect.
Tapes are about £23 PDV184 (270min).
I prefer to use the VX9000 over the TRV900 for most types of work. However, the 900 is far better in low light.
I have used a DSR PD150 and results are very similar to my TRV900. New VX9000's can't be widgeted so you will need another recording device for firewire editing.
If I was buying a camera today with your budget I would buy the VX2000(or DRS PD150), it's at least 3 years newer technology and has better low light capability, DVin/out, Analogue in/out and one NPF960 will run it all day long.
You should also consider the smaller TRV900/PD100 which have similar spec, bigger screen, but cannnot record in dual mic mode i.e. internal and external on seperate channels.
If your showreel is good nobody will care if you look the part. I don't know what type of work you intend to do but a small camera can pay dividends in certain circumstances.
