My Fast DV3 Production Package was delivered with 2 additional softwares: Power DVD player and DVMPEG 5.0 to change AVI files into MPEG1 or 2.
Fast can export DV files only to AVI or QT files and I have successfully exported DV to AVI, using different types of compressions. The best results were obtained by using Indeo Video 5.10 compression. However I have not been able to change these AVI files into MPEG 1 or 2 with DVMPEG. In one instance, I succeeded to obtain a MPEG2 file that could be played by Power DVD, albeit without any sound. Is there anyone that could give me some guideline?
Please note that I am new on MPEG,DVD etc.
Thanks
Fabio

It is not clear to me why you are converting a DV file to a compressed AVI and then trying to compress again to MPEG2. You should really only compress once, ie go from a DV avi file to MPEG2. Is it not possible to produce a straight DV avi file from your fast set up. Can you give a bit more info about how you get the DV material in and what you do to get the compressed avi file?

Use TMPGenc and all will be simplified and the quality will be superb as a bonus!
Andy, you are right in questioning my "double compression" but I only have a CD burner and need to fit the final video in ~640MB.
Indeed I have 2 problems.
1.In Fast you can export a video sequence to AVI full size, quarter size and custom size. The file can be uncompressed or compressed with various systems (Cinepac Radius, Intel Video R3.2, Microsoft video 1, Indeo Video 5.10)
If I export full size and uncompressed, the file is very big and plays jerky with Media Player.
If I export quarter size and uncompressed, the file is still too big to eventually fit into a CD and plays OK with Media Player.
By exporting quarter size and compressed I can stay within my limit and the final AVI result is very acceptable with Media Player.
2. I have been unable so far to convert my AVI file into MPEG2 with DVMPEG 5.0
I guess that if I could export directly from DV to MPEG1 or 2, I could avoid a double compression and stay within the CD limit.
Jimmy, I would appreciate to receive detailed info on TMPGenc. Thanks

TmpgEnc
This isn't the direct link but has info on/to TmpgEnc plus other software etc.

All my DV videos are transferred to CD in mpeg2 DVD format.
I capture DV via a firewire card in Premiere which creates a DV avi file (as you say this is big 14mins is about 4GB). I edit these and add music to make a 14 min DV avi file output from Premiere. I then load this into TMPG to encode to MPEG2 (DVD format, ie full resolution PAL). If I keep the datarate down to 6500kbits/sec I can get 14 mins of very high quality video on CD. If you drop the quality to SVCD or VCD you can get more on a CD but you loose a lot in quality.
I would think you could use your fast setup to edit in DVavi and then convert straight to MPEG1(VCD) or MPEG2(SVCD).
The end format should be chosen to fit in with how you intend to play back the video. If you only ever want to play back on a PC you have much more flexibility on format and datarate (in MPEG1 or 2 datarate is an important factor in quality and final file size). If you want to play back on the TV via a DVD player then you need to be very careful with the format and datarates.
I hope this is helpful.

You really do not want to compress the video twice (I don't think you can even do it).
