Hello,
I capture and edit analogue video with the following system:
Windows 98se
Pentium 3 1GHz processor
256Mb Ram
Matrox Marvel G200 8Mb PCI card
Ulead VideoStudio V7
I have now bought a Sony digital camcorder(DCR-HC30E)and understand that I will need a IEEE1394 PCI card to capture digital video but will I be able to do this on my present system.

Cheers, David

yes .... that should work for you.

but you will need a spare pci slot for the card to sit inside the pc.

You might also need some extra hard drive space -- 1 hour of DV Video will take up about 13gb of storage.

A separate (physical) video-only hard drive comes in handy for capture and edit...

with dv footage coming in at 13gb per hour approx , i wouldn't store more than 2hours on it for editing , otherwise it may slow down.
you need to leave a large chunk free for temp files (renders) and final avi assuming you aren't rendering out to final dv tape only.

Also, with Win98 you're limited to FAT32 filesystem which limits files to 2gig, IIRC... that means your individual files are limited to about 8 minutes or so. Some software can automatically break up all the files so it's not even noticible, but some software it'll become a pain in the rear.

Hi timropp

Old Vfw codecs have a 2GB limit.

Fat32 supports MSDV footage up to 4GB (19½ mins approx) in Windows 98/ME.

XP & Windows 2000 can have virtually unlimited file size (2 Terabytes)

VS7 can capture 4GB chunks seamlessly OK

To add:

Win98SE explorer has a bug which does not allow copying or moving files larger then 2Gb. Even programs which do use explorer functions may suffer of this bug. Only when using the DOS box and the DOS copy function you can copy files larger then 2Gb but always less then 4Gb.

So choose the save side: always stick to below 2Gb file sizes.
