I have upgraded to XP in the hope of getting better video performance. Problem is XP will not recognise my IBM drives as DMA (Win98 did with no problem). Have tried all driver updates etc and new cables. To add insult to injury XP does recognise CD ROM / RW as DMA!!!
Anyone got suggestions - else XP goes back to supplier as NBG!

which ibm drive ?
which ata rating ?
you do know that dma may not be set by default in xp and you have to switch it on yourself.
if ata 66/100 drive then you will need to connect using a 40 pin / 80 wire ata66 rated cable rather than 40pin / 40 wire ata 33 rated cable.
have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/tech/storage/IDE-DMA.asp

Have set "DMA if Avaialable" in the properties of teh IDE interface and XP is happy to see my CD with DMA support set OKif ata 66/100 drive then you will need to connect using a 40 pin / 80 wire ata66 rated cable rather than 40pin / 40 wire ata 33 rated cable. Yep have tried 3 dirrerent 80 cables including the one that works with CD ROM.
Am now thinking it must be a mother vboard fault - although the BIOS recognises the disks as UDMA mode 4
have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/tech/storage/IDE-DMA.asp
ok .... motherboard chipset ?
if a via chipset then you NEED the via4in1 drivers to maximise capabilities.

Am giving up now! XP has 2 days to go and I am not going to "register" yet - will wait 4 a new mother board in the sales!! (any ideas of best one??) the I wont have to argue with MSoft about priacy. Guess my MB is just too old.
Thanks 4 help

sorry i personally only use intel motherboards so don't know which others are wothwhile , but i'm sure others will tell you what works for them.
have a look at http://www.tomshardware.com where many pieces of hardware are compared ( it's american but still a good source of compatability info if not prices)
pcpro has recently done a review of motherboards and i'm sure another won't be far away
You do not say what the rest of your system is!
Upgrading to new software or hardware is best left until someone else has actually proved that it will work.
ie the capture card manufacturer has to release XP drivers, the editing software has to do the same and finally CV mag has to test it out, good "ole Bob" and others have warned about upgrading to XP enough.
If you fail the most basic of nle rules.....
If it ain't broke don't fix it!
then you are asking for trouble.
Regarding MOBO's always opt for one that is on the compatibility list on your capture card manufacturer's web site. My system is based on the Gigabyte GA7 DXR and Win98SE and is the most stable I have come across when operating under Win98 (kiss of death there then). Using AMD chipsets is OK but you need to be careful about the bridge chipsets, some Via ones give problems the AMD 761 chips seem generally to offer a more stable system
